Older Women's Health and Fitness
Being part of the same species, men and women generally have many of the same health problems. However there are different effects for men and women. For example, some illnesses like heart disease may manifest different symptoms for women compared to men. Furthermore, women are more susceptible to other ailments such as osteoarthritis, obesity and depression the other members of the family because most women tend to neglect their own health as they prefer to focus instead on their partner's and their children's.
The first important point to remember is that there are various screenings, tests, or exams that are available which can reveal if a woman falls within any of the high-risk group or possesses factors or things that might increase their chances of developing a certain condition or disease. Such screenings, tests or exams should be taken regularly or as prescribed by their doctors as part of their routine health regimen.
The second is to adopt a consistent workout regimen. This commitment not only increases one's general fitness level, but will also reduce stress and induce one's mind to feel more relaxed thereby generating a greater sense of mental well being.
However, the benefits of exercise is more than merely making one's muscles stronger and making one look slimmer and sleeker. In a 6 month study conducted by the University of British Colombia, it was recorded that older women who had taken part in regular aerobic exercises scored much better in memory tests such in terms of remembering more words and items than the control groups of similarly aged women who did not do any exercise. Apparently, aerobic exercise boosts a brain protein known as brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) which helps our brain to retain memories better.
Although it would be possible to perform exercise anywhere, in order to commit to the kind of consistency that will produce positive health benefits, it is best to be part of a Fitness community that has the general fitness level, but will also reduce stress and induce one's mind to feel more relaxed thereby generating a greater sense of mental well being.
